Two young religious women are drawn into a game of cat and mouse in a stranger’s house. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East in Heretic, plus more modern women killing the horror game. Hugh Grant once said in an interview: “I’m tired of ‘playing obvious roles and being the same’ – writer/directors Scott Beck and Brian Woods saw this interview and wrote the role of Mr. Reed, choosing Hugh as the main candidate for the role.” Mr. Reid was stabbed in the neck and dragged out. This will lead to the fact that blood will flow all over his hand, clothes, floor… but later in the basement, when he is near the hatch, there will be few traces of this. Mr. Reid: I promise you, the last thing I wanted to do was find the one true religion, but unfortunately, I did. The end credits state that Generative AI was not used in the making of the film. Although the film keeps you in suspense for most of the time, by the final act the plot begins to dry up. Hugh Grant played brilliantly, Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East also shine in their roles. The director, cinematographer and set designer also deserve recognition as they gradually immerse you in the growing madness of Grant’s character and his haunted house. Unfortunately, the plot is the weakest point of the film. The tension and mystery builds nicely at the beginning, but about two-thirds of the way through the film, they begin to dissipate. The climax disappointed me a bit, as I was expecting something deeper. Still, The Heretic is an excellent horror film in its own right—enjoyable, but not as memorable as I’d hoped.
